NNU in Nampa, Idaho is a great non-profit university that offers over 60 areas of study and who have been helping educate people in Idaho since 1916! It was a real honor to get to spend some time on the campus, see all of the great people, and know that our work would be serving them for years to come!

Snow and ice covered paths are one of the least liked parts of Winter here in Idaho. Whether it’s just because of the time involved in keeping them clear, or the back strain that goes into doing so, just imagine how great it would be to be able to see the snow falling and smile!

Is it time for a change?
The first big cold snap is on it’s way to the Treasure Valley this week; with the long cold months ahead it’s an opportune time to look at your water heating costs.

Fossil fuels were good for their time, and a long time trusted means of providing the heat you need, but with the advent of newer technologies like solar HVAC the time of the dinosaur has come and gone! Why you ask? It’s simple! The SAVINGS! Beyond that, the efficiency!

With the hot water heating costs for a home making up a large part of your total energy expense you can supply all of your hot water needs with nothing but the energy supplied from the sun.  Just one 20 tube solar thermal panel creates 65 gallons of hot water on a clear winter day – regardless of outside temperature!

We just finished a great install in Burley, ID at a large modern dairy farm.  The install consisted of a 30 panel solar thermal system.  The system has 1500 gallons of solar thermal storage capacity.  The system is designed to provide 1000 gallons of water a day at 165 degree temperature.

Each one of the solar panels offsets 1 ton of carbon emissions per year or 30 tons in total each year and 600 tons over the life of the project.  The economics of the system estimate that the net payback should be accomplished in less than 1 year.  The project was  assisted int he installation with grants from the USDA REAP program and from the US Treasury 1603 Grant.

The project is up and running as designed.

A new report from the Advanced Energy Economy shows that clean energy, like solar and wind, and other energy efficiency services are providing over 400,000 jobs in California. That’s 5% more than the previous year  and it’s slated for an increase of 70,000 more jobs in 2015. Even adjusting for population that kind of economy boost would be huge for Idaho!

So could it happen?
With 16 major solar project slated for 2015, mega-provider Idaho Power would have a total of 1,253 megawatts of new green power on its grid. That’s just solar, and doesn’t include the green power of some 1,700 megawatts Idaho Power could produce at its hydroelectric dams.

And it doesn’t stop there!
Intermountain Energy Partners in Sun Valley plans to build a 40 mega-watt project southeast of Kuna on Sand Creek Road by 2016 and has signed contractswith Idaho Power to build six other projects as well.
